Elevator Daze
As graduation approaches us, we are often questioned, what comes next? Who will we become as artists after leaving the institution that fostered us to this point? Our exhibition theme, Elevator Daze hopes to capture this feeling of liminality. We currently rest in a state of flux, the unknown awaiting us when the door finally opens. It is a moment of anticipation but also a transition of great excitement accompanied by a sense of edginess. For the 21 artists exhibiting at our show, these are our elevator daze. We are actively taking the ride up to our next adventure, each floor in between bringing new experiences, new inspirations, and of course, new passions for our artwork. While future floors remain undiscovered, each stop is an opportunity for growth and change, making the journey that much more exhilarating.
The students of Professor Jinchul Kim’s Senior Exhibition class would like to invite you to experience the works displayed at the 68th Senior Art Show titled Elevator Daze. The show will take place in two different venues, fine art show exhibited at Salisbury University’s Downtown Gallery and graphic design show displayed in the Fulton Hall Gallery. The show will run from April 17th through May 13th. We will be having two receptions with light refreshments and awards for the students’ work. The fine arts show will be holding their reception on Friday, April 21st, from 5 pm to 7 pm and the Graphic Design reception will be on Friday, April 28th, from 5 pm to 7 pm. We sincerely hope you join us to experience the work of 21 talented art students on the precipice of graduation and entering the professional world of art.
Professor Jinchul Kim
Jinchul Kim is a distinguished figurative painter and professor of art at Salisbury University. His most recent work explores the phenomenology of language, specifically the common ground we are able to find despite differences in dialects. He combines multilingual text and psychologically complex cinematic scenes with “ghosts of vision” that disrupt an easy reading of his paintings. His work evokes the liminal stage of college life through that calculated mix as he observes it unfolding around him every day. He received his two MFAs from King Sejong University in Seoul and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He exhibits his work internationally, including shows in Korea, Japan, France, Spain, and the U.S. He has received the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award twice, in 2006 and 2013. Kim teaches the capstone class, Senior Exhibition, Painting, and Drawing classes as head of the painting and drawing areas. In 2008 he earned the University System of Maryland’s highest faculty honor: The Regents Faculty Awards for Excellence in Teaching. He also received the Salisbury University Distinguished Faculty Award in Teaching the same year.
