Artist Statement

The main aesthetic component in my work is centered around geometry. Hard-lined, standard forms stand in opposition to the smooth, organic shapes of nature. I like geometric

forms because of their inherently abstract nature. Their surface is smooth and devoid of detail. It leaves room for viewer interpretation and characterization. I gravitate toward incorporating common forms into landscape paintings because of a landscape's ability to inspire curiosity, awe, and creativity.

While I take much of my inspiration from the surrealists in the way I like to distort perspective and create unnatural spaces for my forms to inhabit, I also take inspiration from the land art movement and the same types of landscapes that inspired the famous land artists like Michael Heizer and Nancy Holt. Vast, empty landscapes are seen as beautiful in their own natural right, but also blank canvases for humanity's continuous development.

As much as we feel a disconnect between our artificial structures and the rest of nature, everything anyone has ever known has originated from our planet. We are but a blip in time compared to the billions of years the earth has existed without us and will continue to exist long after our inevitable extinction. My paintings and sculptures are about what's left behind. The evidence of the artificial and how even our most significant accomplishments, which will long outlast us, will eventually fall to time.
