Artist Statement
The human figure intrigues me, so my work is centered around creating figurative mugs that promote body positivity. After being inspired by gestural depictions of nude forms, I sought to depict various body types in a functional form. I view my work as pieces that invoke a reaction. Whether it's an interesting form, something funny, or cute, I want people to come to pick it up and investigate it. My creative process includes finding compelling forms and glazes. Also, alternative firing methods are used to alter the colors in the clay and glazes. While making my work, I focus on where this piece will be in a person's home and ensure it will fit well in the space. Another thought is how they will interact with the piece and whether it will work well for them. In the way most people routinely make themselves coffee and sip on it to bring them warmth, joy, and satisfaction, I wish people to do the same when viewing their own bodies form: routinely dedicate time to appreciate their body while drinking that cup of coffee.
How come we can have cupboards of mod podge mugs of different shapes, sizes, and colors, but we can't embrace the same when it comes to our own bodies?
