GENEVIEVE SHELTON

ARTIST STATEMENT

Graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design, Gigi Shelton narrates in her Senior Exhibition where her love for art all began, displaying paintings and drawings from the far past to the most recent moment. With a few main pieces emphasized to be on display, the additional sketches and paintings are to serve as a reminder of where you come from and the places you'll go. Inspired by music and the culture surrounding the art community, Shelton creates images that are as layered as the songs they are created to. Using various materials in her canvases, such as acrylic and pastels, to Sharpie markers and linocut stamps, she creates a bustling display of color and linework. Layer upon layer invites the viewer into the piece and encourages them to stay a while. In the midst of the madness, there is always a general emotion or theme to be plucked from the details. She finds comfort in the abstract and unplanned, with most canvases being painted over multiple times, embracing imperfection and highlighting the beauty of life because of it. She often improvises shapes and colors that will be further emphasized with darker colors or intricate linework. This is a form of juxtaposition that we can often find in her work. Constantly pushing the envelope on what she is capable of, her work celebrates the diversity and beauty in the unknown and the art of letting go.
