B.F.A. Hot Glass
As a glass artist, I am interested in creating functional glassware such as bowls and
vases. There is a utility to functional glass that I hadn't explored in my previous work,
and as I began to create more expressively, the functionality of my work was often
compromised, resulting in pieces that I loved but could not comfortably use.
In this series, titled "Overgrowth," I explore this tension between functionality and expression.
I draw inspiration from the conflict between man-made objects and forces of nature;
remnants of functional glassware are overtaken by chaotic elements such as holes,
fragments, cuts, and twists that limit or obliterate their intended function, creating
opposing forces within each piece. Painted or sculpted elements adorn each pedestal to
further enhance the aesthetics of each piece, connecting my expression in glass to my
previous artwork.
