BRYCE PORTER
Artist Statement
Bryce Porter approaches his art from a different perspective, a recurring theme found throughout his work. He captures naturalistic elements in environments and poses that they usually would avoid being captured in. The seemingly ordinary perspective of a straight-on shot may be amplified by the subject going from an average spectator to the star of the show. The subtle switch from observer to focus point is what Porter strives to capture in his work. By capturing subjects that generally aren't found in the spotlight, Porter can bring awareness of such small subjects into the light of beautiful meaning if given enough thought by the viewer. By rendering the images in black and white, the viewer has no alternative escaping excuse for the sake of color used in the subject's freeze-frame. Porter hopes to construct a world in which the viewer may be free to escape to and live from a different perspective for a change.
Born into the 90's Porter's early focus was not the new age of technology but exploring his surroundings, not to be found inside till late evening. His inspiration for photography was found in his earlier years as he would be out until dark, discovering and rediscovering species found around his family's farmhouse. This also pushed that feeling of escape as all the animals enveloped a realm to which he could venture again and again. As he grew older, Porter fell away from his natural habits and found human development and technology suppressing his love for nature. After his commitments have been seen through, he knows he will return to what once sparked his passion. The natural world would always be seen as an escape for Porter no matter the human development seen today.
