EMILY DONAHUE
Artist Statement
Welcome to my room.
As you walk inside, you'll notice my memories scattered as photographs, prints, paintings, drawings, and written pieces. These works represent the struggles, triumphs, and emotions I've experienced throughout my life. My hope is that, even if we have absolutely nothing in common, something in my room will resonate with you. I believe we each have a story inside us, and I encourage you to think about your own life as you step into mine.
Some of my works tackle sensitive topics like sexual harassment and assault, addiction, depression, suicide, pain, and chronic medical conditions. These touchy subjects are expressed in abstract and simple ways that are more conceptual than literal. The use of color to communicate emotion, metaphoric imagery, and the simple execution of complex ideas are all part of my art philosophy. Creating my works in this way makes them accessible to anyone while also slightly hiding their true intentions and deeper meanings. Their creation has been fueled by my own need to be released from these chains that have dragged me down for so long. Each pivotal work has a written piece attached to it to further express my emotions about the particular subject and deliver a deeper sensory experience that isn't just visual.
I invite you to come in, sit down, stay awhile, and explore the more vulnerable side of yourself as you peer into my life. At the same time, though, don't focus too much on what you think my story is. Your story may be here, too, after all. That's the most important thing about my pieces and all art throughout history. It's how it makes you, the discerning onlooker, feel. My intentions, methods, and purpose all take a knee to your own thoughts and emotions. So I implore you; stay as long as you'd like.
Make yourself at home.
