Issue NO. 72: In Bloom

The exhibition for this class is titled Issue No. 72: In Bloom. This capstone course, taught by Professor Jinchul Kim, serves as a culmination of students' artistic journeys at SU, guiding them through the planning and execution of a professional exhibition. In Bloom symbolizes the growth and transformation of our graduating class. Just as plants continuously enter new cycles of life, we, as artists and students, are evolving, ready to embark on new paths while making a lasting impression through our creativity and individuality. As participants in SU’s 72nd senior exhibition, we embrace this transition, metaphorically "blooming" into the next chapter of our lives. The concept of Issue No. 72, captures the essence of our generation. Drawing from vintage aesthetics and the Y2K era, the class sought to infuse a magazine-style design into the exhibition, merging nostalgia with innovation. With a diverse group of 32 students spanning graphic design and fine arts, the exhibition also incorporates influences from the Bauhaus movement, blending structure and creativity into a cohesive, dynamic showcase. will be on Friday, April 28th, from 5 pm to 7 pm. We sincerely hope you join us to experience the work of 32 talented art students on the precipice of graduation and entering the professional world of art.

Exhibition Director

Jinchul Kim is a renowned figurative painter and professor of art at Salisbury University. His recent artwork delves into the phenomenology of language and explores the common ground we discover despite the differences in dialects. He often incorporates multilingual text and psychologically intricate cinematic scenes with "ghosts of vision," which disrupt an easy reading of his paintings. His work invokes the liminal stage of college life through this calculated mix as he observes it unfolding around him every day.He received his two MFAs from King Sejong University in Seoul and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He exhibits his work internationally, including shows in Korea, Japan, France, Spain, and the U.S. He has received the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award twice, in 2006 and 2013.Kim is the head of the painting and drawing areas and director of Senior Exhibition, and he teaches the capstone class, senior exhibition, painting, and drawing classes. In 2008, he earned the University System of Maryland's highest faculty honor: the Regents Faculty Awards for Excellence in Teaching. The same year, he received the Salisbury University Distinguished Faculty Award in Teaching. In 2022 and 2023, the Fulton School of Liberal Arts recognized him as the recipient of the Fulton Faculty Award in Teaching in 2022 and the Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2023.
